Artist Statement

My work is a expression of my journey through life – what I know, what I don’t know, the places I travel, the people that inspire me, the things that scare me – all the moments in life that have meaning to me. It is in this walk that I find my truest inspiration. It is here that I question, I wonder, I explore, I marvel and deepen my connections with the people and family that touch my life. Like a poet who uses words to express, my canvas is the page on which my brush paints the words.  My work is meant to remind us of our interwoven connection with each other, with nature, and with our collective past.

About My Art

I like to create a journey for the eyes and the mind…using exuberant layers of texture and contrast which float through my abstract canvases with a subtle edginess. “There is  an openness that directs this self-imposed process of adding and subtracting, as I build, destroy, erase and paint over. During the process there is a definite chaos through which each work evolves, revealing markings and scars of previous stages. I have a connection to these subtleties, revealing some, hiding others...knowing full well all that has been before.”  My paintings are designed to capture the viewers imagination with the overlapping layers of mixed textures, abstract forms and bold use of paint.

My materials include acrylic, charcoal, oil pastel, papers and found objects; the application of these is one of layering, peeling and dripping. Drawing from over 20 years in the commercial graphic arts field, I find that painting is a liberating act in contrast to the grids and rules of graphic design. My painting style gives me permission to paint outside the lines.
